Aaron's Top Fives is a new feature that I'll be doing. Basically, I'll make a list of five things based on whatever automotive-related topic I've chosen. This time, it's five $18,000 cars found on AutoTrader that you should really buy instead of the Smart ForTwo, in no particular order.
2008 Audi A8L 4.2 Quattro: Make sure you get a warranty on this one, if at all possible.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2006 Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged:
This one may also need a warranty. Just maybe.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2006 BMW M3 Convertible: Much better than the Smart ForTwo convertible.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2011 Volkswagen Golf GTI Autobahn: The original hot hatch.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2009 Saab 9-3 Aero: A Saab wagon; a true unicorn. Not many of these around, but man, they're cheap.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Well, that concludes the first edition of Aaron's Top Fives . Stay tuned for the next report, in which I'll cover something else car-related that no one will care about.
Before you flood the comments section with questions, this Aaron Paul is not the rich, famous dude from Breaking Bad and other films. This Aaron Paul is just an automotive enthusiast who happens to like writing, even though he's admittedly not great at it. Follow him on Twitter !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I'd get one of these since I've been craving ten cylinders lately.

The difference is, no one would cross-shop these. People who want a Smart would get a Smart. They serve a certain purpose that very few companies have capitalized on.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:29 |

But the Smart ForTwo is crap. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather have a full-size luxury sedan for the same price.

I approve.

It's only real rival there in the USA is the Fiat 500. Here there's probably about 20 better buys for the money.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:35 |
|
All of these cars are crap and will give you headaches with the high repair costs, including the stupid smart car, but at least it's rear-engine RWD like the 911 ;)
If you want a luxury sedan for the price of a smart, get a Lexus LS430 or 460.

True, but I didn't want to go on and on, so I just picked my top five to include in this post.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:38 |
|
Well, there is that. Warranty time, bro.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:38 |
|
But people who drive Smarts want little cars. The only viable car for what people want here is the Golf.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:39 |
|
Can I buy a 2012 Smart fortwo instead? xD
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:40 |
|
Well, then they can get a Golf. I tried to include something for everyone in this list.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:41 |
|
Haha, go ahead. Or get a Fiat 500 Abarth. Those are good, too.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:41 |
|
It is good for what it is, a small city car. A large luxury sedan is not a small city car, therefore would not be cross shopped.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:42 |
|
My Fiat would say you are forgetting the 500.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:42 |

Where is "here?"
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:43 |
|
True; most probably wouldn't cross-shop them. But I bet the people who think like Tavarish would. :)
![]() 02/19/2015 at 20:44 |

This is the only Smart Car that I actually desire.

The UK

That is such a hideously unreliable list that I'd almost rather have a Smart.
And you better hope Miss Mercedes, Smart Expert doesn't see this post haha she owns one, ya know!

Comparing those cars to a Smart is a bit ridiculous. They're made for different purposes. You wouldn't tell somebody who's shopping for a tractor to buy a combine harvester instead, even if they're both the same price. The Smart was specifically designed to be as small and manouverable as possible, and if somebody is looking to buy one they're likely doing so because they want those exact qualities. Why would you tell that person to buy an Audi A8L instead?
![]() 02/19/2015 at 21:02 |
|
Because I happen to think a bit like Tavarish.
And if someone I knew was looking for a small, fun, maneuverable city car, I'd tell them to get a Fiat 500 Abarth rather than a Smart anyway.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 21:08 |

Thing is, the 500 is still almost a metre longer than the ForTwo, that's a pretty massive difference. There aren't really any other cars in Smart's class. The only other way to get a car this tiny is to buy a microcar (like an Aixam) and those are infinitely worse than Smarts.

You know, as weird as it is, I'm kinda excited for the new smart cars. I've always had a weird fondness for the little twingo and having someone else take a crack at making the little 3 cylinder pot for it and a different transmission could mean that this thing actually stands a chance at some more efficiency.
Buy one? I dunno bout that, Parking isn't an issue for me right now and that's kinda these thing's ace. Should the roadster return though and they'd have my attention

Hers isn't a cabrio, though

I'd say the iQ competes as well...kind of? I dont know that they actually sell any.

In the U.K. for the price of a new Smart Fortwo (£11,125-14,220) you can have a new
Renault Twingo
Toyota Aygo
Peugeot 108
Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii and VW Up
Skoda Fabia
new Fabia out soon
Fiat 500
So many more in fact that the Smart doesn't even enter into my mind to consider.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 21:41 |

The new ones should be much better than the current-gen model that I'm talking about in this article (since you can't actually buy a next-gen ForTwo or ForFour yet). And the Twingo is a fantastic little car. Shame we dont get Renaults over here.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 21:44 |

Tiny little hatchbacks like those are definitely a lot more popular over in Europe than they are here in the U.S. Of the ones you mentioned, I'd probably go with the Twingo or the VW, provided that it's the FXXK Up! edition car.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 21:47 |
|
And that looks insanely fun....
![]() 02/19/2015 at 22:02 |

Good choice though I'd maybe choose the Skoda Citigo Black Edition or the Fabia Black Edition over the FXXK UP.

You're actually going to want warranties on all of those.
![]() 02/19/2015 at 23:27 |

Oh i know, but since this is the last model year of the outgoing model. It's like comparing the Lancer or the Chrysler 200/sebring to cars you can get for 30k. And if we're all honest this was a car that was heavy, underpowered by a mitsubishi engine, and so niche it hurt when it was new 9 years ago. The only defense this poor little thing has in your comparison is it's warranty and it's ability to come in the color yellow. Oh and maybe how much of their little value they end up keeping.
I mean these little cars have gotten such flak ever since they first arrived on our shores, and it's not undeserved but at the very least they're unique and when the whole world was offering basically the same little econobox.
And so, after all this time I think it's nicer to look forward to the honest potential these things have when the new model comes out.

I completely forgot these existed. Haven't seen one on the road in years.

....Oh?
Oh you want a convertible?

How did I miss this post? Oh boy...
Wait, so you're telling someone that's looking to buy a city car, to go any buy land barges, SUVs, and sports sedans instead??
I don't think you understand how comparos like these are supposed to work (Tavarish usually compares similar cars). A much better one would be:
1. Scion iQ (Toyota discontinued it, so I bet you can find deeeeeeeep discounts).
2. Fiat 500 (a worthy city car contender).
3. Chevy Spark (Chevy sure does love their Daewoos).
4. A used MINI.
5. Mazda 2 (yes, they exist!)
